(Below is the text of an email sent to CVHS families this afternoon, March 10, 2021).

Good afternoon, CVHS Families.

We are writing this as a follow-up to communication originally posted on our website earlier today. As we shared this morning, we were made aware earlier today of an inappropriate social media post, attributed to one of our students, that does not align with the values and culture of Cumberland Valley School District.

As we promised in our original website communication (posted below) we immediately launched an investigation to learn more about the situation. As such, our actions included notice to the appropriate jurisdictional law enforcement agency for further investigation as it is apparent that the inappropriate content was created off site and with a personal device.

The original post has garnered attention on social media. As a result, the district did receive a threat of violence should action not be taken against the student. Law enforcement has been notified and immediately began an investigation into the threat. No evidence has been found to substantiate the threat.

We appreciate the desire of our community and beyond to ensure individuals are held accountable for their actions. However, privacy laws prohibit us from discussing discipline of any specific situation. We understand that this is not the answer that many of our students and families are looking for, but we must abide by law. We can, however, assure you that action will be taken as appropriate and as allowable. We can also assure you, in no uncertain terms, that we do not condone the words, the actions, the beliefs, or the behaviors mentioned in the original social media post.

Parents, we ask that you continue to partner with us by using this as another opportunity to discuss responsible social media use with your children. We need to make sure our children fully understand that online platforms have a lasting footprint and can amplify our poorly chosen words, thoughts, or actions well beyond their intent and with lasting consequences.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and your continued support of Cumberland Valley School District.

With sincere appreciation,

David E. Christopher, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
