Bruce S. Dallas was a 1966 graduate of Cumberland Valley High School. Known for his athletic abilities and leadership qualities, he was class president for four consecutive years and held the distinguished title of state high jump champion for two years. His CV high jump record of 6’ 8.5” still stands and is the longest unbroken record at the high school. After high school, he competed at the College of William and Mary under the direction of Coach Harry Groves, the former Head Coach of the Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country program at Penn State College.

Mr. Dallas was very active in our community and held leadership positions in the Cumberland Valley Youth Basketball Association, Central Pennsylvania Youth Soccer League, and the YMCA Indian Guides and Princess programs. He was also a coach for both boys’ and girls’ sports. At the time of death, he was Director of Communications for the State Department of Environment Protection.

When he died on September 27, 1997 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer, his family and friends gave contributions to the Eagle Foundation in the hope that one day CV would be able to hold an invitational track and field meet in his name. The completion of the new track and stadium at CV in 2000 helped turn that dream into a reality.

In 2002 the 1st Annual Bruce Dallas Invitational was held. In a few short years the meet has grown to become one of the best early season meets in Pennsylvania.
