WELCOME TO MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC

The purpose of the middle school general music curriculum is to encourage a graduated knowledge and appreciation of music, which engages the mind to read, compose, perform, critique and enrich the lives of all students.  Through active participation in a variety of individual and ensemble experiences, students are encouraged to strive for musical excellence and to become life-long participants, intelligent consumers and active patrons and advocates for the arts.

Course objectives include:

Development of music skills and concepts through performances as individuals and as part of an ensemble.  Students develop their knowledge of rhythm, melody and harmony through music literacy, performance, improvisation and composition.  Students have the opportunity to explore performance through the introduction of the guitar and Yamaha MIE keyboards.

Analyzing and evaluating music, performers and performances. Students listen to and critique their classroom performances, concerts and professional recordings.

Exposure to various time periods and genres of music.  Throughout their three years of general music, students are exposed to music ranging from Medieval times to the 21st century. Examples include music from various world cultures.
