Internet At Home

The Cumberland Valley School District realizes that not every family has access to the Internet at home. Below is a curated collection of resources for families to obtain broadband Internet at their home at low or no cost. If these options do not work for your family please contact your building principal to see if a district provided solution is available for your family.

 

 

Many smartphones can be turned into a "hotspot" for use by other devices. Depending on your provider and plan, this may be either free or a small additional charge to your service. If you are unsure about your plan, contact your provider for details.

Comcast announced it will be increasing speeds for the Internet Essentials program. In addition, making the program free to new low-income customers for two months, amid the coronavirus outbreak.


To sign up, applicants can simply visit www.internetessentials.com. The accessible website also includes the option to video chat with customer service agents in American Sign Language. There are also two dedicated phone numbers 1-855-846-8376 for English and 1-855-765-6995 for Spanish.

 

   FCC image of the APC   The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) is a U.S. government program that helps many low income households pay for broadband service and internet connected devices.
You are likely eligible if your household’s income is below 200% of the Federal Poverty Line, or if you or someone you live with currently receives a government benefit like SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, WIC, Pell Grant, or Free and Reduced-Price Lunch.

USAC (a funding branch of the FCC) offers a program called Lifeline which provides discounts to qualified families on their home Internet service. A consumer can qualify for the Lifeline benefit if their income is 135% or less than the federal poverty guidelines, or if they participate in SNAP, Medicaid, or other federal programs. Verizon offers Verizon Lifeline plans for home phone service or broadband (internet) service. The broadband discount is limited to Fios internet service at a speed of 18 megabits per second or above.


If you qualify for the Lifeline discount service, you are eligible to receive a reduced rate on your Verizon monthly bill. T-Mobile has announced that current T-Mobile wireless customers who have cell-phone plans with data will be granted unlimited smartphone data for the next 60 days. They'll also receive an additional 20GB of mobile hotspot/tethering service for those two months.

AT&T’s Access program provides $10/month home-based Internet to limited income households. Also offering two months of free service to new Access customers who order by April 30, 2020 ($10/mo thereafter) and waiving all home internet data overage fees.

The FCC has asked the nation’s telecommunications companies to take the https://www.fcc.gov/keep-americans-connected, which includes a commitment that vendors make their community Wi-Fi Hotspots open and free to all.
