Olweus Bullying Prevention at CV

What is the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP)?

The Olweus program is the most-researched and best-known bullying prevention program available today. With more than 35 years of research and successful implementation all over the world, OBPP is a whole-school program that has been proven to prevent and/or reduce bullying throughout a school setting. OBPP is a comprehensive program that includes all components of a school setting for involvement and support: schoolwide, classroom, individual, staff, parents, and community.

Certified Olweus Bullying Prevention Trainer Geraldine Johnson said schools across the country have indicated marked improvement in attendance and student achievement, while at the same time decreased bullying activities, upon implementation of the Olweus program.

How has CV implemented OBPP into our schools?

The Olweus program was implemented into the existing bullying prevention programs through a phased approach. As of 2012, Olweus was fully implemented into each of our schools.

“The goal of this program is to get adults to recognize and take steps to eliminate bullying, and to get students to stand up against bullying and to become active bystanders,” said Johnson.

What are the components of the OBPP?

The program includes the establishment of a bullying prevention team which includes staff and parents, additional committee and staff trainings, and regular classroom meetings K-12. Class meetings include topics such as:

  • defining bullying
  • forms of bullying
  • roles students can take in bullying situations
  • bullying consequences
  • school rules
  • positive ways to include students who are often excluded

Parent meetings will also be hosted as part of the Olweus program.

How is CV funding implementation of OBPP?

Implementation of the Olweus program at CV is being funded, in part, through a grant from PA Cares in cooperation with Highmark Healthy High 5.
