What Does a Bring Your Own Device Plan Mean?
Students, staff, and guests will be allowed to use their personal internet-ready devices throughout the district and will be able to access the internet through an open network (filtering will remain in place as per the Children’s Internet Protection Act to filter pornography and obscenities).
Currently, a policy is in place to allow students to bring electronic devices to school. Guidelines for use are developed on a grade-level basis; there currently is no access to the network, including wireless internet, on these personal devices.
The Bring Your Own Device plan does not require students have a personal internet-capable device, but rather allows connectivity to the internet for those who choose to bring a device to school and allows for the use of such devices in classroom settings, when appropriate. Additionally, teachers and administrators will be trained in technology integration and will be encouraged to use technology when appropriate.
An internet-ready device includes laptops, tablets (Kindle, iPad, etc), MP3 players (iPods, etc.), and smartphones (Apple, Android, Blackberry, etc) that have the capability of accessing the internet.
A Bring Your Own Device policy calls for informational presentations for all stakeholders, including staff, students, and parents, prior to implementation next year. The presentations for students, staff, and parents include review of expectations and guidelines for use, and staff professional development on integration into the classroom.
